When laundry is dried outdoors it takes on a delightful and temporary smell. What causes this smell?

My sense is that the fragrance is stronger in cold weather.

When cellulose is damaged by sunlight, it will give off this smell that we like. So the more we expose clothing to the sun, the more cellulose is injured. We call it sun's flavor.

The scent you pick up is called "Fresh air". Fresh air gives cloths a pleasant "free" smell. The reason it smells better in winter is because the air is cleaner.
