This may appear if a cat has sustained an injury to their eye or if an eye infection is present,it may also be seen if they have a foreign object such as a hair in the eye. In some cases this may also happen if a cat is ill or under the weather that may require veterinary treatment.

Cats have inner 'eyelids' - a thin membrane that protects the eye and helps to keep it moist. A cat's outer eyelids are shorter and less flexible than a human's, meaning their outer eyelids often drift apart when the cat is asleep, revealing the inner membrane.

If you gently push up under the cat's outer eyelid, and then pull down on the skin above the whiskers, you can see a slightly translucent membrane known as the third eyelid. It starts in the inner corner of the eyelid, and can stretch out all the way across the eyeball.

I can see my cant's third eyelid when she is tired. Sometimes it will show when she opens her eyes after she was sleeping. It also shows when she is looking sideways.
