When blacksmiths fill the hole what do they use?

I'm presuming that you are digging the hole for the blacksmith's forge. YOu need to fill it with something that will not catch fire, basically. There are many different sorts of materials that work, fired brick fragments and pumice are some of the more common supports for the heat of a forge.

You can use a variety of materials- rubber, leather or just get a new sole. There are many suggestions for what to use but each blacksmith just does what works for him.
