The most common cause would be the transmission filter being dirty. Enough of a clog will begin to affect the performance of the transmission. In newer vehicles, the transmission programmer is electronically controlled. The performance parameters may need to be reset, a job for transmission shop or dealer garage.

A manual transmission is not meant to go into overdrive consistently. It corrodes the flywheel and decreases reaction time. Excessive use of overdrive can also cause unwanted wear and tear on the engine. If your car won't shift anymore, chances are that your transmission is slipping and a replacement or realignment is necessary.

One of the most common reasons why your car may not go into overdrive is that there could be a flooding problem which may need a change in the exhaust or removal.
