What's the difference between tracing and drawing?

A tracing is created by following the lines (tracing) of an image under a translucent piece of paper. It allows the artist to almost exactly copy the original. A drawing is an image sketched out that does not rely on tracing, but rather is done freehand or with tools such as a ruler or compass.

Drawing is creating an original picture by hand. Tracing is creating a picture by using a drawing that was done previously.
