A WAN is a wireless area network. This is a particular type of network which can allow access to the internet if the wireless router is attached to a modem.

The internet is a server that many people can link up to. a WAN is somewhat of a private server that is ran out of someones office/home/etc that is more private used to personal or bussines topics.
