The best cough medication is dependent on your symptoms. If it is a dry cough, without congestion in your chest, then delsym is great to quiet the cough. If you have congestion, you will need to have a cough medication that helps you get the mucus/congestion moving and out of your lungs. Look for a cough medication with an expectorant.

The generic Wal Mart version of Robitussin DM. Unlike the name brands, the generic is still a thicker formula that coats the throat as it goes down. Robitussin has raised their prices and cheapened their formulas making the medicines not work as well.

The generally accepted most effective cough medicine is a syrup combination of hydrocodone, guafinesin, and dextromethorphan. It is prescription only however. Delsym is DXM only, and can be effective as well. None of these medicines are effective for whooping cough, or non-productive (non-phlegmatic), long lasting coughs. You should see a doctor.

Delsym is definitely the best over-the-counter cough syrup. It contains dextromethorphan, an ingredient that quiets cough. Other products contain this ingredient, but Delsym releases it over 12 hours and lasts significantly longer than any other OTC product.

Delsym is one of the best cough medicines that is available over the counter. There are other prescription medications that can also be good.
