It depends on where your molar is. If it's under the skin, it may require cutting the skin open. If it's under the bone, it might require heavy surgery. In the easiest cases, it's a matter of simply popping the tooth out and staunching the blood flow, then being careful until it heals.

Your dentist first puts a topical on your gums near the area. Then he injects a numbing agent into the area in your gums near the tooth. Finally he basically gets his tools around the tooth to loosen it up. He will yank on your tooth and pull out both the tooth and roots.
