Canvas is always good canopy material as it is good except that the sun tends to rot the material. Another good material is vinyl but the sun is also hard on that as well. A solid canopy with tin will last the longest if you can make it solid I would to hold up to weather.

Cotton and canvas can be used for canopies and can be bought treated with waterproofing chemicals. Some may prefer wicker or wood lattice for a more filtered sunlight effect.

The usual material used for canopies is canvas made from a textile fabric or cotton. Some people prefer wicker or wooden lattice, some even use plastic either a clear plastic or a cloudy plastic to keep the sun out. However my favorite one would the vinyl canopy cover. Those last for a long time.

Most professional companies use a textile fabric when making a canopy for a patio. Many home improvement buffs can also use a few tarps sewn together to make their own canopy for their patio.
