If you are using a modern version of OS X, you should be able to right click a file or folder and select the "compress" option. Instant zip file!

There is several good zip utilities for Mac. "StuffIt" is the most poplar, "The Unarchiver" is the second most popular, and "Archive Utility" is the third most popular. 7zip and Winrar are the best for windows.

Zip it should work. I also think you can try using winrar. It's a windows format but it is also designed to work on a mac. So go ahead and try it.

Mac OSX has built in support for zip files and many other kinds of archives. If you're running classic Mac OS (i.e. 9 or below) then you don't have many options. StuffIt by Aladdin Software used to be a very popular choice, but I like the free and open source MacZip, which is fast and streamlined.

A good alternative to ZipIt is unrarx. It has the additional possibility to spread the archive over several numbered files.

MacZip, Stuffit, and other free software is available for download. However, Mac OS X has an integrated compression utility. Right click on the file or folder you wish to compress and select "Create Archive of ---," where "---" is folder or file you wish to compress. It's that simple, the zip file should then appear in the same directory.
