Question by  DavidEC (18)

What would cause my car battery to repeatedly die?

I just replaced the battery in my Chevy Trailblazer and when I turn on the air conditioner, the battery dies.

Assuming there's no short in the wiring, your alternator could have some of the diodes burnt out and not be cranking out enouth amps to drive the solenoid clutch for your air conditioner. The solenoid clutch needs some 6 amps, so can run your battery dry in a few hours if the alternator isn't working.

This could be caused by a bad ground or by a component in your vehicle that puts a continuous load/strain on the electrical system. If it only occurs when you turn the air on and not the heat it could be the AC compressor clutch. If it happens with the heat too it could be your blower motor overloading.

Your car battery is suffering a drainage because something in your car electrical system is grounding out. Simply replacing the battery isn't solving the problem. You need to find the source of grounding so that you can either fix it or cut it off. If not, you will continue to drain your battery.

If your car is dying when the AC is on then you have a short need to fix it immediately. Or you have a slow drain on the battery.
