I would say they had a strong sense of the distinctions between the sex roles. Through literature of the time period women had a strict sex role distinction. Also they had a positive sense in the belief in progress. That through hard word civilization was improving.

Victorian men were very religious and viewed themselves as the heads and protectors of their households. Men were very respectful toward women, but only because they viewed them as weak. Masculinity was important, and work was seen as essential to maintaining a masculine image. Being strong was very important, as was a good, disciplined education.

Victorian men had been taught that they were the dominant gender, per God's own design. Industry provided many manual labor jobs in growing factories, but most were still on farms.
