Christopher Columbus is also known as Cristóbal Colon. Historians believe his Italian birth name was Cristoforo Colombo. In some Spanish speaking countries, his name is Cristóval. Unfortunately, historians do not have one answer. Records are incomplete, but one theory is he may have changed his name after becoming a Spanish national.

Kit is a nickname for Christopher, and some believe that Columbus named the island of St. Kitts by combining his own nickname with that of Saint Christopher.
