The decision said essentially that a woman is entitled to have an abortion up the the point that the fetus is "viable. " The case disallowed many state and federal laws/restrictions that were in place at the time, thus sparking a debate that still rages today.

It simply states women have the right to make the decision concerning their pregnancy. Before Wade it was illegal to get abortion and most women who wanted one had to do so illegally or go to Canada or Mexico. The ruling prevented many women dying from back room and illegal abortions.

Before Roe VS Wade, abortion laws were set by the states. New York already had legal abortion. The issue with Roe VS Wade is that the Supreme Court created a new "right to privacy" that didn't exist before and legalized abortion no matter how voters in a state had decided.

The Roe Vs Wade decision was in favor of Jane Roe and upheld a woman's right to terminate a pregnancy for any reason until the fetus becomes viable. The decision prompted a national debate about the legality of abortion that continues on today.

A woman may abort a pregnancy for any reason provided that the fetus is not "viable" (i. e. , can live outside the womb); otherwise, a woman's health must be endangered.
