It was theoretically possible the experiment was going to create black holes on Earth. When particles smash into each other in outer space they create black holes. The experiment was going to duplicate that process by colliding a beam of protons at incredible speeds around a 17 mile circular tunnel.

The experiment in Switzerland was a study to see if the big bang theory is correct. Though, in order to do that they needed to make a small black hole. Some people believe that the small black hole will pull the earth in by breaking it apart. The machine is turned on so, cross your fingers.

The Switzerland experiment is a scientific effort to recreate conditions just after the Big Bang (the massive explosion that created the universe) inside the Large Hadron Collider(LHC) an accelerator specifically designed for the experiment in Switcherland. The outcome is very valuable from the scientific point of view because it will help understand our universe and reveal its deepest secrets.

I'm guessing you're talking about the Large Hadron Collider, the world's most powerful particle accelerator, built in order to observe theoretical particles. The controversy you probably heard about is that people think it will result in a "second Big Bang," a black hole, or other such disasters.
