The policy was to reduce our dependence on foreign oil. President Carter aimed at achieving this by raising the standards of fuel efficiency of American made cars. It worked because over a period of time oil imports from the Persian Gulf fell by a whopping 87 percent.

The energy crisis in 1973 some believe was due to an oil embargo by OPEC in response to the United States decision to support Isreal in the Yom Kippur War.

Lead by President G. Ford the republicans helped to take price controls off oil from stipper wells and residual fuels. Although domestic fuel production was still declining at the end of this presidents term the actions of his republican term helped to slow the rise in the worlds oil prices.
