Feudalism wasn't slavery but it was quite like it. The nobility were given sprawling land and the poor commoners were forced to work on these farms in exchange for protection from the feudal lord. There was no upward mobility and life was very grim for the poor.

Feudalism was a system of governing that utilized a sovreign, lords, and serfs. The lords ruled over smaller pieces of land, which serf were born into. Serfs, in exchange for working the land, were protected and provided for by the lords. The lords answered to a sovreign, usually a king.
