Lonely people lack social connections and one of the quickest ways to get connections is through the Anonymous programs, where newcomers are provided with sponsors. A person who is lonely is likely to qualify for one or more programs and meetings are open to all. Joining any social uplift organisation provides you with something to offer others.

Since you are in a bigger city there are plenty of places you can go to find people. There are many clubs based on things you like to do in the area that you can join for free. You could also go out to a bar or a club.

It all depends on what type of support you are looking for. You can check around the San Fransisco city website to see if there are organizations in town. Otherwise, you could go to the city council and ask them for help. They are very helpful.

Check newspaper classifieds. Check cafes and bookstores for interesting groups. Join a gardening club. Advertise for a friend in the newspaper. There's lots you can do.

There are a TON of common interest groups you can join in the city. You can find other people to hang out with so you're not lonely.
