any kind will work, as long as you do not put too much and use a rich, organic soil mixture. natural always works best.

The bottom half of the trench you are planning on planting your potatoes use a mixture of straw, mulch, compost and garden soil. Fill the rest with just garden soil. The best fertilizer will contain low amounts of nitrogen and high levels of phosphorus. When going to buy fertilizer the nursery will be able to point you to correct fertilizer.

I've personally found that a compost based fertilizer works very well with potatoes. They're hardy and will usually grow fine without it but a little extra help never hurt anything.
