Fashion changed dramatically over the course of the century. In women's fashion, hoop skirts and fitted bodices gave way to empire waists and corsets and bustles. In men's tapered knee length pants and socks gave way to the more typical trousers we see today.

As a lover of victorian movies I can say this. Dresses were long and depending upon the era they may have been empire waisted and flowing/strait, or at the midrift waist and completely fitted with corsets, petticoats, and hoops (many frills). Hats were fashionable, and everything had buttons and ribbons

For girls and ladies, the dress, complete with bloomers and camisoles were a must. Basic dresses worn by women were long sleeved, cinched at the waist with long flowing skirts. The corset was another clothing item that gained much popularity during this time frame. Men's dress was more formal with crisp shirts, vests and jackets.
