It depends on how far you need to run it, 12 is usually for up to 30 ft. The 14 is for 18 ft. runs and 16 for 10 ft.

Most contemporary home theater system can use any gauge that is between sizes 10 and 16. And if you can do a research for different brands of gauge wire to learn how they color the sound of a home theater system, if they do really match.
