What should you expect from your first sonogram?

What are they looking for?

During your first sonogram the technician will largely be looking to see how large the fetus is. This will be an indication of when you are due. Additionally, they look to see how many fetuses are present as knowing if you have multiples early is helpful. This may be an internal sonogram which may be uncomfortable but not horrible.

At the first sonogram, they usually use an ultrasound to confirm that the pregnancy is viable and will also try to confirm the fetus heartbeat. It is a non-invasive diagnostic test that provides you an image of your baby, placenta and uterus.

It depends on how early they do it. Some doctors refuse to do one until you are twenty weeks in order to determine the sex. The first sonogram is used to determine the length of the baby and the size. It is also looking for any visible defects in your baby.

They are verifying the pregnancy, checking for multiples, listening/looking for heartbeart, verifying position of the baby in the uterus, measuring it to estimate due date.
