What should my aquarium water's alkalinity be?

It depends on what type of fish you're keeping. Most salt water fish require alkaline water (above 7.0. ) Freshwater fish such as African cichlids require a pH of at least 8.0. Fish native to the Amazon River basin, like tetras and pacus, require a pH of 6 to 7. It's not too difficult to adjust water alkalinity if necessary.

The alkalinity depends on what type of fish you have. Some fish prefer a lower alkalinity while others prefer a higher alkalinity. You should research the type of fish you own and see what alkalinity they do best in. If you need to raise or lower the alkalinity, visit your local fish supply store for help.
