You should measure the room and be sure the unit will put out enough btu's to cool the entire room or the entire apartment. Your best bet is to use wall units called ptac units. You can order the units through maintenance supply houses or at a big box home improvement store.

The first thing you should look for is the Energy Star Rating and what it would cost to run. Most room airconditioners today are very affordable and cheap to run.
