If you have good masonry skills, that's a good start. However, you would also need basic business and construction-specific skills, such as how to manage employees (unless you will be working alone), money management/accounting, an understanding of local construction code, etc.

For starters you need your contractors, business licence and gl insurance. You maynot need workers comp yet but know that most big jobs wont let you into contract with out it. Type a letter introducing your company, experience ask to be on a bid list. Get every general contractors fax number in the book and send.

Have a list of all your past customers and be sure they were satisfied. Have business cards made. Network everywhere you go. Join Angies list, and be insured.

Before starting I would check into insurance requirements. A reliable insurance agent will tell you everything you need to know.

Any business should have suitable liability insurance. Also, taxes for self-employed or small business owners are different than for regular employees.

Have good insurance in place before you start. If a masonry project goes wrong and you get sued, it will make the difference between solvency and bankruptcy. Have a portfolio of work for prospective clients to review.

You need to identify your competitive advantage, meaning what do you have that no one else can do! Your prices must be lower than the competition and your service must be exceptional. You have to catch the eye of the customer before they see the next competition.

You should have all tools necessary. You might need some helpers and you definitely need the knowledge of the market and its demands.

Before you start your own masonry construction business you will need to know how to sell your services for a profit. How to estimate costs and make enough money to keep your business going. You will need to know where to purchase material and how to find customers.
