Cutting the largest and tallest stems at the base. If it is terribly overgrown you would not want to cut more than 1/4th or 1/3rd this year. New shoots will appear.

Uniquely designed to grow into a tree or hedge, the rose of sharon is very trainable. Tie the limbs together to train upward growth. Trim new growth to facilitate hedge-like growth. New growth sprouts from the latest growth, so any time of year is perfect for trimming.

These bushes do not need to be trimmed if they have enough growing area, and get quite tall. If you must trim, they are hardy plants and can be trimmed back to branches of 2'. Early spring is the time to prune during the March to May period. This will encourage more flowers all the way thru September!

This shrub is a late bloomer and should be trimmed late winter, before it breaks dormancy. Depending on your zone, this will be between March and the end of May.

You can trim Rose of Sharon into a tree, bush, or hedge. Consider your ultimate shape when trimming. Remember that cutting a branch or tip will cause several new sprouts to grow into a branch that will grow from that point. Watch for cuts that cause branches at odd angles. Hardy and forgiving, it will bloom in any shape.

Well, trim from an angle and be very careful in terms of how much you are trimming. You don't want to trim the root buds.
