If your thyroid is underly or overly active there are medications that the doctor can perscribe to you to control it better. If the medications do not work for you as a last resort the doctors can give you radiation to kill your thyroid and replace the missing thyriod hormones with medication.

Normally in a blood report, the TSH will be low and T3 and T4 will be free. If TSH is high, it is a rare case. So thyroid ultrasound scan should be taken and the pituitary secretions should also be watched through a MRI scan. This may also be malfunction of nodules. Consult a physician immediately.

TSH and T3/T4 are measured to determine if thyroid dysfunction is due to a problem with the thyroid gland itself, or if the pituitary gland is causing the problem. Elevation of TSH and T3/T4 indicates that the thyroid dysfunction is caused by a primary problem with the pituitary gland.
