Be careful that when bottle feeding that the bottle stays in an upright position so that the baby is not sucking air. This will cause the baby to have excessive gas and make his/her stomach hurt. With the baby not being to be able to be up and moving the air will have a hard time escaping.

Swallowing air causes excess gas in your infant and cause irritability. You can hold the baby more upright while feeding to reduce the amount of air that the infant is swallowing. The feedings should involve frequent burping to help reduce the excess gas.

If your baby is bottle-fed, you should try to sit them up as much as possible while feeding, as well as keep the bottle angled so there's no air at the tip, just milk. Also, it's good to stop mid-feed and burp, as well as burp at the end.

A three week old baby that swallows air will be more gassy than one that does not. It is common for them to get some air while they are nursing or taking a bottle. If you want to reduce the amount of gas they have and discomfort try to reduce the amount of air they swallow.

Swallowing air at any age is not a good thing. It's not entirely dangerous, but it usually causes hiccups and can even lead to vomiting, which of course leads to upset stomach and a cranky child. If coughing, hiccups, or vomiting persist for days, don't hesitate to consult your doctor as this could be signs of something more serious.
