Cable is sized primarily by how many watts of power it is equipped to handle. Using a smaller cable can lead to a fire hazard, while larger has no problems.

There are a few things to know or understand. You must run wire for the correct size breaker you are using and the maximum amount of amps the thing you are wiring needs to run. I would check in the nec code to see what you want to wire and see what size wire you need.
