You can plant coleus anytime warmth is available.Do not over water. Soil needs good drainage. When plating from a seed you should mix the soil with peat or clean dry sand sprinkled over the seed bed.Place in shade during germination keeping moist.Transfer into a pot or flower bed after germination.

Check your USDA cold hardiness zone and the cold hardiness of your coleus variety. It is possible to grow coleus indoors for a short time but keep it away from direct light. Treat coleus as an annual in cold winter zones. Keep in shade in areas with hot summers.

A coleus is typically thought of as a shade plant, but there are several that do well in the sun. Pinching the new growth will prevent it from becoming leggy.

Coleus need plenty of water and indirect sunlight. If planted in the sun they will turn brown and begin to wilt. Otherwise they are hardy plants.
