One can expect a recovery time of a couple of weeks with some pain at the surgical incision. There may be alterations in bowel movements, with occasional blood in the stool, which should resolve with time. It may be several months, however, until completely normal bowel function returns. One may have more or less frequent bowel movements.

For a while, you won't be able to eat because you'll need time for your colon to heal. You'll start gradually on liquids, then to soft foods and finally regular food if tolerated. You may not be able to hold as much in your colon, but else no significant change.

A colon resection is either an end to end anastomosis, which is the removal of a part of the colon and the two end hooked together. There is always a chance a temporary colostomy may have to be done until is can be reversed after the anastomosis has healed.

You are encouraged to resume normal, light activities almost immediately. It is really on you, and your comfort level. Most patients resume full work at 14 days.

There will be paing related to the incision, and a altering of bowel habits. There could also be blood in the stool. Also, eat foods that are easy to process.
