You will be put under anestesia during the procedure, and should expect to be in the hospital for around a week. If permanent, you will have a colostomy bag.

It depends if the colostomy will be permanent or temporary. Usually if doctors believe the operated part of the colon will heal, the colostomy is reversed. They will actually attach the healthy end of the colon to the abdominal wall to provide a way out for the feces. In some cases the colostomy is permanent, like advanced colon cancer.

Basically, after part of your colon is removed, the end portion will be attached to a hole made in your abdomen. A bag will be placed over that hole so your bowel movements will be contained in that bag.

Recovery time is usually about 6 weeks or longer. You will be restricted to bed rest fr several weeks. You will be restricted to a low fiber diet at first. This will depend on what your doctor recommends. There will be a learning process concerning how to use and take care of your stoma.

This procedure will take at least two or three hours. The colostomy, when complete, will need to pass gas after a few days to make sue it is working correctly. Training will be provided for the care of the colostomy, and colostomy supplies are available by mail. They arrive in plain packaging.
