What should I do if there is no grass in my pasture for my horses?

No grass means overgrazing. Take the horse off the pasture. You may need to have it replanted to restore it. Feed your horse a good quality hay (some do well on a grass/alfafa mix, others on Orchard or Timothy Grass hay). Also provide the horse a pelleted complete feed. Use a type appropriate for your horse's age and activity level.

Preferably, you will purchase and feed a high-quality hay. Orchard grass, timothy or other grass hays are preferable as alfalfa has an improper Ca:P ratio. If this is unavailable in your area or your horse cannot eat hay for some reason, there are complete feeds on the market that will provide the nutrition your horse needs on a hayless diet.

Feeding horses a good quality grass hay is one thing to do if there is no pasture. Round bales set into the pasture is an option, make sure the hay is stored properly before purchase to avoid mold. Feeding one forty pound square bale per day per horse is the standard- half a bale in AM, half in PM.

Go to the feed store and get your horses some hay. Your horses should have about two flakes of hay a day. Avoid giving Alfalfa because it is hard to digest so it should only be given sparingly. You should also feed your horses grain in addition to the hay.
