Unless you are an attorney, and you want to represent him, you really can not do very much for him. The best things that you could do for him are to give him your "moral support" and the contact information for a good lawyer, assuming he wants to fight their claim.

The matter is between your son and the insurance company. The insurance company is likely relying on information provided following the fire department's investigation.

Your son should try to negotiate a settlement for the damages if he is at fault. He can argue against the suit if not at fault, but if he stands to lose then he would probably do better to settle before going to court.

You should contact your State Legislator and demand that the insurance laws be changed to prevent this sort of thing. The true purpose of insurance is to spread the effects of loss across society instead of the individual. In the meantime, your son should get help from an attorney.
