Check the battery indicator in the OS to make sure it is receiving a charge. If not, a neat trick is to unplug the laptop, remove the battery, and touch the battery contacts with some grounded metal. If this doesn't work, you may need a new battery.

There is not much you can do on your own. I'd suggest sending the battery over for a check at Compaq. If needed, you can buy a new replacement battery.
