You should gently compress using a cold cloth ( keep the cloth in refrigerator for few minutes), this will surely help.

The best thing you can do for a black eye is apply an ice pack on it. The coldness from the icepack will stop the blood from staying near your eye and circulate it better therefore reducing the swelling on your eye. Only leave the ice pack on in 30 minute intervals though.

I would suggest icing the black eye by putting ice into a plastic bag, then wrapping the bag in a tea towel, then gently placing the wrapped ice over your eye. Also, you can take an anti-inflammatory with that to help out with the pain and help ease the swelling.

Apply ice compresses for the swelling and for the bruising I would apply warm compresses to help the bruising go away faster.

Contrary to belief one shouldn't put a raw steak on their eye it wouldn't help any. It's saod that either heat or something cold like an ice pack will do the job.
