Cypress mulch is best used around plants and flowers, and not vegetables. While the mulch is best used for moisture retention, it does not really offer any significant organic nutrients to the plants as other mulches do. Be sure to keep mulch from touching plants as it can rob them of nitrogen. Otherwise, it is safe to pets and humans.

Plants are not suppose to grow 'in' much as oppose to growing 'under' them. Mulch is used to keep moisture in and deter weeds from growing.
