An expository essay is only about facts. Unlike persuasive or personal writing, it should not include any opinions at all. Usually, expository essays simply describe or explain something, but they can be analytical as well.

Facts are what you use to support your thesis statement. The more facts you use from reliable (academic) resources, the more convincing your argument will be. This is true whether you are writing a five paragraph essay or a 40 page term paper. It's also true for writing a letter to the editor and for writing grants.

The purpose of an expository essay is to advance a thesis or argument. Facts provide supporting evidence for why your analysis and solution is accurate or effective.
