What makes a menstrual period "abnormal"?

Is it just that it lasts a long time?

The length of a menstrual period can vary widely. I believe 'abnormal' is used to indicate pain, heat, clotting or other occurences that aren't normal for you. There's a wide range of 'normal' so you should have it checked by your health professional.

Abnormal just means there's something about your period that's not like the average. It can be heavier or lighter or can last longer or shorter than normal. You may experience PMS symptoms that are worse than usual. An irregular period can be one that doesn't come at consistent intervals. If you think yours might be abnormal, talk to your doctor.

A period that lasts more than seven days, is accompanied by severe cramping and bleeding, or is not fairly predictable may be termed "abnormal."

This can mean anything from the period lasts longer than it is supposed to (7 days or more), that the blood flow is especially heavy, or that it is accompanied by severe pain (beyond regular period cramps and aches).
