Two primary species of rabbits in the United States are jackrabbits and eastern cottontail rabbits. The term eastern is however misleading. The term eastern is misleading because the eastern cottontail species is actually spread throughout the easter portion of the United states and the midwest, giving them a wider range than the name suggests.
Some of the types of rabbits inhabiting the US are Cottontails, Jackrabbits, Flemish giant, New Zealand, American, Beveren, French Silver,Chinchilla and Angora. There are also Belgian hare, Patagonian and lop-eared rabbits.
All kinds of rabbits can live in the US either in captivity or in the wild. The most popular wild rabbits are the cottontails. New Jersey alone claims they have over 7 million wild rabbits. There are over 50 recognized breeds by the American Rabbit Breeder's Association who determines the rules under which rabbits are shown.
