One great miniature frog is the African Dwarf Frog. They are easy to maintain as they have low maintenance requirements and they are great pets for beginners.
The African dwarf frog makes a great pet for the beginner. They are reasonably priced and eat frozen blood worms. They don't require more care than a goldfish would.
An African Dwarf frog would make a perfect pet frog for your son. They eat fish flakes and live in aquariams and are not poisonous. They only cost about $3.00.
I would go to a local pet store to see what they have to offer. Little tree frogs could be a great choice and you will find that pet store will not carry poisonous species. I recommend that you research the care of these frogs to make sure you and your son are ready for this commitment.
Realistic looking plastic frogs would be the lowest maintenance. When I was a kid, I wanted a frog hatchery for christmas. I got it and started growing frogs. It had a lamp to keep the water warm. I forgot about it and the water dried up. So did the tadpoles.
