The Spruce Pine prefers river valleys and swamps that are poorly drained.. It prefers an acidic sandy loam and that has an high organic matter.

Pine trees create high acidity environment when they drop their needles and begin to decay and make the soil acidic. The acid created by the decomposing pine needles acts as a defense mechanism to prevent other plants from growing near pine tree and competing for nutrients.
