There are many different species of moths and butterflies that are large and green in the larval stage. Some that come to mind are hornworms, luna moth, polyphemus moth, io moth (covered in stinging spines) and others. The largest is the Hickory Horned Devil which has huge yet harmless horns.

Without seeing the catapillar I can't be sure, but if it is not 'furry', but light green in color and over two inches long there is a possibility that it will turn into a lovely Luna Moth. As far as I know, these moths are harmless and you, if you are lucky, you will see a green moth appear.

There are many types of large green caterpillars, but the one I'm most familiar with is the Lunar Moth, which is a silk moth found primarily in the eastern United States.

This caterpillar will most likely turn into a Robin moth. It is America's largest moth and is tan, black, and red in coloring. It is of the Wild Silk Moths family. Before it hatches, it is kept in a cocoon in a dark and hidden place to protect it from predators.
