To start with, you will want to get the basic entomology equipment. This can usually be found in a kit so you do not have to search for supplies. You will also need to create traps to catch them with so you can mount them and start your collection.

You can collect during the day, at night with a porch light, black light or traps. All you need is a handy butterfly net and a collection bag.
