If grown in a pot use rich but porous soil. If planted outside use a coarse soil that is not as rich as the pot soil and make sure it has good drainage.
Plants grow best with small amounts of nutrients constantly available. Specifically for bougainvilleas I would recommend a fertilizer that contains phosphorus, iron and magnesium. Slow release.
