It can be a variety of things. The most common possibility is a filter that is completely fouled with dust and dirt. Another possibility is coils that also fouled with dust and dirt. A third possibility is that the coolant is needing to be replaced. The first two are simple fixes, but the last needs a professional.

First ,I would check the filter and make sure it is clean, check fins for straightness, check thermostat for high setting if the temperature dropped to a cold outside temp that was lower than normal for that time of the season and the temp inside was set on high, that may have created a freeze up.

You are probably just over cooling your home. Try leaving your AC at a comfortable temperature (like 72-75 degrees) after you unfreeze it. Unfreezing it consists of simply leaving your unit on "fan mode" on the "on" position. Just make sure that you're NOT running the AC and ONLY running the fan during the thawing period!

First it could be a lack of air flow across the evaporator coils. Check the filter, change if it is dirty. If the filter is clean, check the evaporator coils, if they are dirty, have then cleaned. The second reason is, the unit could be low on freon. Have a professional check it over.

Check to see that it's air filter isn't constricted this is the most likely cause of freeze up. Check the fan v-belt and make sure it's not cracked or loose. Make sure the supply registers aren't closed or blocked. An electrical surge or storm could also cause failure check your circuit breaker.
