Wire gauze is a weaving of rough metal that can be placed under an object - for instance a pot or a container used for scientific testing - that needs to be heated. This protects the bottom of the object from being burned, but still allows the transmission of heat.

A wire gauze is sort of like a screen, often times used in chemistry labs. You put the wire gauze on a bunsen burner, then put your beaker or flask on top of it. The wire gauze helps to spread the flame from the bunsen burner.
