A totalitarian government is one that attempts to control every aspect of its people's lives, and one which the people themselves are not allowed to change or to influence in any way.
An authoritarian government rules without opposition. A totalitarian government rules with total authority in government, social institutions, manages the media, religious organizations and even dictates social mores.
