Being terminated means your employment with the company has ended. There is no speculation as to the motivation in the word it's self from a legal stand point. In conversation there is sometimes an implication that they were fired. Otherwise they would have said the employee was laid off or quit as to not reflect poorly on the previous employee.

Laid off is when an employer no longer requires the employee and is letting them go. The position is eliminated and thus the person is, too. Fired is when the person has committed misconduct and is eliminated, but the position still remains. You get unemployment if laid off; you do not get unemployment if fired.
