I recommend you have a veterinarian before I start any treatment. However, before you veterinarian gets to your horse you can rub ligament on the stifle. If you horse doesn't get better it could be a sign that the stifle is damaged and may need further testing on the stifle.

Backing the horse will often unlock the stifle. Exercise- long walk strides with hind legs reaching well up under the body, long trotting, careful circles will build muscle in stifle.

Low impact exercise, such as hand walking, progressing to hand walking up gentle hills will help build up the muscle tone. Your vet may recommend anti-inflammatory or pain medications that can also be effective. More severe cases may require ligament surgery.

Young horses often spontaneously grow out of upward fixation of the patella (locked stifle) as their bodies mature. It is important to provide gentle and progressive exercise on a regular basis during and after resolution of the locked condition. Pain killers and anti-inflammatories may also be prescribed by your vet.

First try a routine of working the horse up and down hills. If this doesn't fix the problem, contact your vet - a steroid shot will generally provide relief.

Gentle exercises are the starting place for treatment. Anti-imflammatories and/or painkillers may be necessary, as this is painful for the horse. This problem will usually heal itself, but in tough cases surgery is an option.

The only surefire treatment for a horse with a chronic locked stifle is a surgery where a vet cuts the ligament that causes the stifle to lock.
